Decent Smaller Capacity Backpack
In the short time I have owned this 40L backpack, I have really put it to the test. It's been on 3 day hikes, 5 overnight backpacking trips, and trips on an airplane. This Maelstrom Hiking Backpack is actually of decent quality and well-stitched. So far I've had no failures in the straps, buckles, cordage, pockets, or anything else. It wipes down clean and airs out fresh after every trip. There are plenty of pockets and pouches along with two water bottle pockets to either side for balanced water carry. The zippers have been no issue whatsoever. They are quality and never bind of snag. The straps all stay put and adjust the way you expect them to. The buckles seem sturdy and snap on and off exactly as expected. If you are hiking overnight I think this is a good option at 40L. If you are going for multiple nights, it's likely you will want something bigger. In my experience, it holds 25 lbs comfortably. I have had up to 35 lbs in it but it was really hard on my shoulders not matter how I adjusted it. Trying to stuff what you need into this smaller pack for multiple days backpack camping is tough. It's really hard to settle the pack in the right way so that it hangs properly for ease of carry. One good thing about the size, is that this backpack will easily fit into overhead bins as a carry-on if you are flying. I've had it on overnight and a 3-night plane trip and I easily fit what I needed into this pack. It seems to spot-clean pretty easily. I have just used cold water on a cloth so far and it's gotten out typical camping dirt and grime. If it takes on any camp odors like smoke, I have gotten it to air out in a couple of days hanging up in my garage. In summary, this is a great starter pack for an extended day hike or overnight backpacking/camping for someone new to camping that wants to see if they like it without spending much more money on a name brand pack. Ultimately, I upgraded to the Mystery Ranch Bridger 55L backpack for backpack camping as I needed something more suited for 2 - 5 day overnight excursions with heavy water carry. I do still use this Maelstrom 40L whenever I fly out for a night or two.

Great value for the money. Killer day pack.
I've done a few 3-4 mile hikes with it loaded at 15-20 lbs w/ my camp axe, pull saw, hammock/tarp system, rain gear, 1L stainless water bottle, typical odds/ends, and some room to spare. First time was a little uncomfortable but it (or my body) seemed to break in after a few miles and I like it much more now. I love all the storage options, esp the belt pockets. I'll reiterate what's been said about the belt. It's strangely long compared to my other packs and even my big 65L multi night pack. I wear a 32-33 waist in levi's and almost run out of belt. So anyone 30" or less won't be able to tighten it. It leaves probably a foot belt strap hangin on each side once tightened. Will likely cut/melt/sew to be more reasonable though I really don't notice them when hiking. just look a little stupid. My biggest disappointment is that the load lifters don't work very well. I think the rear anchor point is too low on the pack. I'm 6'2", 185lbs and mostly legs (34 inseam). The pack seems plenty long for my spine length so I think its just the geometry/design of the straps/lifters. I wouldn't expect to haul much weight over 15-18lbs comfortably for more than 5-7 miles before shoulder fatigue sets in. But I have yet to test. I'm used to a semi-tight chest strap which can supplement the load lifter issue above but this pack has elastic on one side which is a foreign feel to me. Not really a problem. Ultimately I really like the pack. The price is tough to beat. I went with this over the osprey, etc. because I love a padded belt with pockets. And mostly because I wanted an inexpensive day pack. I can see pulling 1-2 overnight camps easily with it which would be nice not having to bust out my 65L gregory for.

Hiking backpack
This product appears to be very good quality and it holds a lot. It is very adjustable to fit any body type and it looks like it will hold a ton of stuff. I can't wait to try it out!

So far so good
So far I love this backpack. I tried the 50L first, but found it was a little big for my frame. This one fits well and I live the protective rain cover since it will be thoroughly tested in those conditions! I'll post an update.

10 day trip to Egypt with this backpack
I used this backpack as my carry on for a 10 day trip to Egypt and fit a huge amount into it. I kept being able to fit more than I expected and the waist strap made it comfortable to carry through varipus airport and transfers within Egypt during my trip. I was able to fit it under the seat in front of me, which was a huge help when overhead bins were nearly full, or were too small for the backpack (some of the smaller airbuses bins were too narrow).

This backpack has most of the features I was looking for. I wish the hydration hose access was on the other side or that there was one on each side. Looking forward to testing out.

Great Backpack!
I rarely leave reviews but I really like this pack. I haven't used it out yet but after filling it with my gear and trying it on I have a general idea of how it will be with use. It's an incredible value for the money! I love all the straps that help tighten the fit so it doesn't feel like it's sagging on my back. I also love the zippered pouches around the waist. The long waist straps mentioned in other reviews really aren't that bothersome. I clipped a whistle and mini flashlight to the front shoulder clip, which is a great, easily accessible place for them. It would be nice if the back was a little more sturdy but it is cushioned some and the straps help secure the fit. For the price this is a great backpack! I'm impressed and even thinking about buying another one.
