Beautiful looking but inconsistent firmness

This topper arrived well packaged and easy to unroll, it expanded pretty quickly. I lay it on the floor and walked over the middle ridge from the fold and walked around the edges and it expanded right away, within minutes. The off-gassing occurred later (kind of strong), and I had to place a fan in front of the bed it was laying on for a few hours and it dissipated within a few hours. It looked so nice, and the comfortable light grey jersey cover made it look so inviting. But I noticed that the edges were more firm than the center. If I laid on either edge of the topper on the left or right side, it was perfectly comfortable but the middle would sag out and my but would sink right down which eventually caused pain and discomfort. (I weight around 137 lbs and have an average build, so this should not have been an issue). I spent the night tossing and turning and laying only on the edge, until I finally got up and took the thing off. NOTE: If the topper was not folded in the middle, it would not be weaker in the middle. Sadly, to fold the topper in the middle and vacuum seal it might cause the foam to be weaker in the middle than on the edges. I sadly had to return it as it was just inconsistent in overall firmness.

Finally Found "The One"

After investing a lot of money in a quality "luxury firm" inner spring hybrid mattress, my wife and I decided that our bedding was geared more toward firm than luxury. We tried a few alternatives on our primary and seasonal home beds, including this from Lucid: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H2OCVYO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and this from Karrism: KARRISM Extra Thick Mattress Topper(King), Cooling Mattress Pad Cover Topper, 400TC Cotton Pillow Top (8-21Inch Deep Pocket) Both were so-so for us. The memory foam in the 3-inch Lucid can give sleepers that "stuck in the mud" feeling, whereas the Karrism tended to flatten and didn't give us that "floating on a cloud" feeling we hoped for. Enter the Tuft & Needle topper... The T&N package arrived in a day or two, a 28-lb box with a stretch-wrapped topper inside. It doesn't need time to expand or "off-gas". Smell was mimimal; barely perceptible and not offensive, so I let it air out on top of the bare mattress before encasing it in our bamboo mattress protector and new sheets. That night, my wife climbed into bed and said, "wow!". She also liked the mattress topper... ;-) Both of us slept through the night and woke up without joint pain. Within two nights, I got the green light to toss out the box. This topper was worth every penny, and would not be going back. I can't speak for longevity, as we've had it a week or so, but it has a 3-year warranty and seems well-made. Two thumbs up from side-sleeper and a back-sleeper. Would recommend, and may give as gifts to family members I like.

Not right for me, but might be good for others

It's no fluke that this is one of the top rated mattress toppers for side sleepers, as it is soft, responsive, contouring, and breathable. However, as someone who is 5'2", 175 lbs, and carries half her weight in her hips, with broad shoulders to boot... this isn't right for me. Firstly, 2" is not enough clearance for my shoulders so I still wake up with shoulder pain (albeit reduced quite a bit). Second, since my hips must weigh at least 50 lbs on their own and this is soft enough that my shoulders sink all the way through... well, my hips do too. Down to the mattress below, with no resistance. The result is that I sleep at a bit of an angle, with my upper body weight bearing down on my hips which now exert even greater pressure on the firm mattress below. This means that my hips hurt -- and so does my lower back, because my spine isn't anywhere close to proper alignment. I would recommend this for someone who has a smaller BMI, whether you weigh less or are simply much taller than I am. And I would also recommend it for someone who whose hips stick out more than their shoulders. That way you should get the support you need from the mattress underneath while still getting the cushioning benefits of the topper for your shoulders. In my case, though, I will be returning this. No use adding lower back and hip pain to the already intense shoulder pain. If you're a hot sleeper, note that this will trap *some* heat, but I have found it's a small amount compared to memory foam toppers and even some latex ones. (I'm a hot sleeper, and it isn't enough to bother me.) It's virtually impossible to find a topper that will not trap any heat at all -- the best I found had wool in the top later (and it has other issues).

So comfortable

I was unsure and waited a long time before purchasing this topper since the reviews were mixed. I had bought a new mattress and was having hip and shoulder pain from the firmness. I tried a feather bed and then a natural latex topper, neither softened the mattress enough. This one sounded like it would add the just the right amount of plushness. I ordered an all cotton mattress pad to put over it as reviewers said it sleeps hot, and it helps it stay in place. It does sleep a warm (I find this more than my husband) but it is oh so comfortable.
