Very fun little game, my family loves it!
I have been looking for games for our family of 6 people to all play together. I wanted something fun for all our ages, with the goal being to spend more time together instead of vegging out with no interaction in front of the TV. I read about Munchkin years ago and kept putting off buying it, now I wish I had just bought it a long time ago. This is a very fun, very easy game to play and is enjoyable for everyone in our family, from ages 9-65 (youngest up to Grandma!). We all love it and have played it everyday since the day it arrived. Now we are all looking forward to adding some of the themed expansion decks. If you are looking for a good family game [way more fun than monopoly, Risk and all the other usual crap], with a quirky/geeky side of humor thrown in, this is a game worth checking out. **Update** After playing this game for several weeks since buying it, I had to revise this review to help get the word out. This game is a LOT more fun than any other board or card game I've ever played. I have now bought almost every expansion and the fun literally never ends. Munchkin (& it's expansions) is a wonderful family fun game for sitting around the table for either a quick 40min round or an epic 2hour match. It is also a blast as a party game. Get this base game of Munchkin and a few choice expansions & invite some friends over for a very very fun party night. The more cards you have the more people can play, we've had up to 8 so far with no problems. It's a fast paced game, so a game round with 6 people usually takes ~1 hour, if you don't let people take too much time on their turns. _____________________________________________________________________ I HIGHLY recommend buying the base game and the following expansions in this suggested order, for the absolute most enjoyment - and you ARE going to want some (or all) of these expansion packs. The fun, hilarity & wackiness are too much to miss. Hopefully someone will find this information helpful. It's a very long list, but I wanted to be comprehensive for anyone trying to figure this stuff out. I sure could have used this info when I was looking at all the extra packs to figure out what to buy when. You can feel free to combine any Munchkin pack with either the base game or any full expansion and play it all together just fine. This is just a recommendation based on my experience playing all of these: [*A note on Full Expansions vs small Card Packs - Full themed expansions are just like the Munchkin 1 base game & have enough cards that they can be played alone without adding any other packs...or you can of course mix them together with any other packs for some fun combinations (for ex: you could mix Munchkin & Zombies, or make a Super/Zombie pack, or Pirate/Bites, etc). Full themed expansions have a lot of cards (168ish), come in a larger box & cost ~$20. There are a few vitally *AWESOME* booster packs that have 112 cards & cost $5-15 (all listed out below). Most normal small booster card packs for any theme usually have 15 cards & cost $5-15. Almost everything I have came with Free Shipping from Amazon. I've listed the newest/latest version of everything, so when you buy look for any "Revised" Edition like I link to below.] _____________________________________________________________________ * Munchkin Deluxe (the Dlx version is just the base card game & comes with pawns & a level counter board to help you keep count. None of these extras are vital, it's just very helpful to have. If you don't have the board, just use a pen & paper to keep up w everyone's levels - players levels will change often) Each of these booster packs listed below adds something unique, interesting & fun to the base game. There are a LOT more booster packs, I will list them later. These here are the ones I consider *essential* to having the most fun with the base game. These all add something significant & amazing to the base game without changing it in any severe way. So I call them "vanilla" addon packs. Buy them, play them with the Deluxe version, love them. Seriously, now. ;p *Munchkin 2: Unnatural Axe Revised Edition (112 cards) *Munchkin 3: Clerical Errors (112 cards) *Munchkin 4: The Need For Steed (Revised Edition) (112 cards) *Munchkin 5: De-Ranged (112 cards) * (Skip 6 & 7, they are both mentioned below) *Munchkin 8: Half Horse, Will Travel (112 cards) Those are all of the 112 card packs, and they are all excellent! Most of the other packs are 15 card booster packs that don't add anything new, exciting or special. Except this one: *Munchkin Easter Eggs (15 cards) - This is really a *GREAT* booster pack. The art & humor are all top notch, as you will come to expect w most things Munchkin. Fight Bunnythulu. Become even more overpowered (that's a good thing). Adds fun monsters, modifiers & treasures. Who doesn't love treasure? Once you get all of the above packs, mix them all in together with the base game pack and play it as your regular vanilla Munchkin deck. It will be a lot of cards. You will want them all. After all those are added to the basic Munchkin game you have some choices. You can buy & mix several other packs (all listed below) into your main deck which will do fun & strange things to the basic game, or you can do what I did & keep a "pure" munchkin deck w it's own mostly vanilla expansion packs (it's a massive amount of cards without any other themes mixed in -- no vampires, space, zombies, cowboys etc, just regular ole plain vanilla Munchkin-themed cards). _____________________________________________________________________ **FULL THEMED GAME PACKS** I sometimes mix some of the other themed decks & smaller packs into a separate blended Munchkin experience that I keep apart from my regular vanilla deck mix listed above. However, most of the themed expansion packs are so complete & so much fun by themselves that I leave them alone, for ex: we usually don't mix Zombies & Vampires....but you could....and it would be awesome. The themed sets all have their own themed expansions & sequels. The Cthulu set alone has 5 booster packs + the main game set. Thats a lot of cards, and it plays perfectly well on its own. But every now and then you really should get crazy and mix some of these together to play something like Zombie-Vampire Munchkin, WITH some of the really good vanilla packs added in (the ones listed above). Or go all wild and buy them all & mix them all in together. Insane, I know. So you could end up with say, a super mixed pack of Super Vampire Zombie Cthulu Space Munchkin, with steeds & rangers. I have got to try that. *Star Munchkin Revised Edition ,Star Munchkin 2 (Revised) &Space Ships Star Munchkin Expansion -- VERY fun geeky set. This is actually our favorite of all of the themes. Lots of Doctor Who/Star Wars/Star Trek & other geeky scifi references, great humor. Love it. *Munchkin Zombies , Munchkin Zombies 2 Armed and Dangerous, Munchkin Zombies 3 Hideous Hideouts (Dungeons), Munchkin Zombies Meat Lockers <-- This is a set of 2 boxes to hold all your Zombie cards. Also comes with 2 unique cards you can't get anywhere else. Also, there is now a Munchkin Zombies 3 which is not available here yet but is for sale at munchkinworld-dot-com. * Munchkin Bites! (Revised), Munchkin Bites 2 Pants Macabre * Munchkin Cthulhu (168 cards/$18), Munchkin Cthulhu 2 Call of Cowthulhu (56 cards), Munchkin Cthulhu 3 Unspeakable Vault (Rev.), Munchkin Cthulhu 4 Crazed Caverns (Dungeon cards) & Munchkin Cthulhu Crypts Of Concealment Buy these 2 together * Munchkin Booty (Revised), Munchkin Booty 2 Jump The Shark (Revised Edition), Munchkin Booty Fish & Ships Booster Pack (15 cards) --> Buy these 3 all together to make a Booty set. The 3 packs all work very well together (of course you can always mix these up w other sets). * Super Munchkin (Revised), Super Munchkin 2 (Revised) -- Superhero themed. Good stuff. * MunchkinFu (Revised), & MunchkinFu2 Monkey Business - Humorous theme inspired

Fun for the whole party
I played this game with my family during the winter solstice a few years ago, and I must say that this game is by far one of my favourite card-board game hybrids. I am a huge DnD nerd and the inside jokes related to this game make it well-worth playing. I'd argue, however, that it should be made more accessible to those outside the boardgame fanbase, as I've found that trying to teach it to complete newbies is a hastle.

Great game
This game is super fun and it also has several expansions to change the game and make replaying even more interesting. I would definitely recommend this game!

Expect betrayal
Munchkin Deluxe Board Game (Base Game) is a hilarious and entertaining game that pokes fun at classic fantasy RPGs. With easy-to-learn rules and plenty of opportunities for strategy and backstabbing, players must navigate through dungeons and defeat monsters to gain levels and collect treasure.

Fun time
We found our new family game. It's a little bit of a learning curve, but it's easy enough to check the instructions or online when we are not sure on how to rule. The cards are beautiful and easy to use. The deluxe version comes with all you need, dices, mat and character cards. We had a few more expansion and it's hilarious. No need to prepare a character for 3 days, you distribute the cards and you're ready to play.

The girls and I love playing (our house rules) but it took us a ...
I grabbed this deluxe version because it was on sale for less than the normal munchkin game. I got a little lucky in the price, but it is definitely worth the normal price for the game. I picked it up after having watched it on table top w/ my daughters. They got a kick out of the game and were very excited to get a copy of it for ourselves. The girls and I love playing (our house rules) but it took us a while to get there. We played through 3 games, well actually didn't even play through them...we couldn't finish the games we started because it was so boring. We even watched back the table top episode to see where we made mistakes each time, how was it that their game was so insanely fun and our games were so boring? Obviously we're boring people...so enter a little ingenuity and fun factor and we've got a great game that makes for fun, fast play, that can keep even my youngest (6) child happy and entertained. So why the 4 star review? Well there are a couple reasons, first off I felt like the game on it's own was a chore to play, even with my buddies, we get to the point where it takes too long for a game to play that we end up having to introduce modified rules. Therein lies another issue, those rules, wow...it took me a four or five read-throughs just to get a grasp on them...and that's after watching the rules on table top 3 or 4 times! The next reason I mark it down is just because of sheer petty disgust at how much this milking has been done on this game...there have to be 40 different expansions, in my opinion it made me lose interest in the game because I couldn't figure out if I should stick with this game or get some expansions, it was just too overwhelming. Overall though, the game is entertaining and worth the investment for a family game night or game groups. Just as a heads up...there are some inappropriate cards that some of the more mindful parents might not want their children reading...but they're not horribly inappropriate...and you can always pull those cards & still enjoy the rest of the game. As an aside...our 'house' rules essentially modify the gameplay in a few minor ways. We separate the races and classes, randomly deal one of each to each player, so everyone has at least one race & one class they CAN use (we then shuffle them back into the deck and deal out our cards), each hand we draw a treasure card at the start of your turn, and finally we allow trading. We genuinely try to help each other as much as possible, and I won't mess with my kids until they're 5 levels ahead of me, or at level 8 or above. But the trading is fun because it allows us to see other cards and learn what they can do and typically makes for more dialogue between us, so we can talk about what we want, why we want it, how it'd be awesome if we had something else to make an even better character. These modifications make the gameplay a lot more fun and fast paced. For my game group we use a little of the house rules the kids and I came up with...we allow for trading, we draw a treasure card each round, but to combat sell happy players, we limit the amount of levels a player can purchase (the trade in of over 1000 dollars of items for a level) to 2 per game, or if games are going too fast, 1 per game. We do not utilize the starting race/class modification. Overall, with these house rules added on, it again makes for a faster game and keeps people entertained and intertwined.

Super addictive fantasy card/board game. Watch out, you may get hooked into buying expansions.
Munchkin is a great Dungeons and Dragons parody game, full of quirky humour and adorable graphics on the cards. This is a must game for any would-be geek/nerd. (Please note that the base game can be bought without the deluxe version, it just depends if you want the extras or not.) This version of Munchkin provides the base game card deck with character cards, 6 coloured plastic character tokens and a very simple 1-10 board to illustrate game progression. As mentioned you can buy it without the board or extras but play is a little more straight forward with them. There is space in the box to add in expansions but it could get messy. Thankfully each expansion to Munchkin is identifiable on the cards (you might have to scan through the deck to check). The game is both simple to dive into and great fun with great replayabilty. If you are a stickler for rules they come with the game and are dowloadable from the official Munchkin website. You play as a "Munchkin", who for all purposes is a generic treasure hunting Human character. Equip him/her with armour and weapons, change them into a thief or a cleric or wizard etc and even change their race from Dwarf to Elf and so on, using cards you have from your hand. Then "knock" on a door to find out what is in the next dungeon. The aim of the game is to get your character to level 10, simply by battling and defeating monsters. Of course it isn't as simpe as have more power than said monster. Find a monster who is too powerful to defeat and you can use potions/spells or abilities or even call on a friend (who may or may not help). Or maybe you can easily defeat the monster, in which case your friend could chose to help the monster defeat you. Things get ugly as you get closer to winning and it's never as straight forward as have the most powerful character. What I love is that even if someone is miles ahead they can come crashing down very easily. Game times can vary from 10mins to 1 hour. The more people you have the more competitive and longer the games can last. My experience has been that the various add ons are well worth a look and don't forget to checkout forums and other online stuff for variant rules etc. Buy this if: 1) You like quirky role playing games that make fun of the genre 2) You have more than 2 friends as above 3) Even if you don't like the above but want something different from Monopoly or Trivial pursuit 4) You may be willing to lose hours playing and replaying Don't buy this if: 1) You have no sense of humour 2) You really don't have more than 1 other friend 3) Monopoly is you favourtie game ever and there's nothing to beat it...

Good game poor packaging
Good game, mostly easy to learn. However it was sent in a plastic bag so two corners of the box were damaged and I’m now using tape on the box to stop the top of the lid separating.

Munchkin: The anti-Dungeon!!
There is an old board game, that is back out for buying, called Dungeon, made originally by TSR and now sold by Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast. It is a simple game of players going around a dungeon, kicking in doors, facing monsters and if victorious winning their treasure. The first to reach a certain amount of treasure, dictated by their class, and return to the great hall at the centre where all the players start, wins the game. The game is not co-operative, but neither can the players do anything to impede or harm the other players. Its a race to the finish. The game is designed for younger players but for the whole family to get a taste of dungeoneering. Why do I bring this game up? because in many ways Munchkin is a parody of Dungeon. In essence the goal is the same. Explore a dungeon, kick in doors, defeat monsters and get their treasure. First to tenth level wins the game. But whereas Dungeon is a fun light game of players racing to be first, Munchkin has players actively aiding other characters when its in their best interests and also aiding the monsters when it suits their purposes as well. Where Dungeon allows for no player on player interference, Munchkin not only allows for it it actively encourages it. The game is at its heart a card game with cards depicting monsters to be faced, along with various traps, items, and special effects. Races and classes are also included in the game for players to become as the game progresses if they choose to. The cards in themselves are all incredibly humorous and its clear that the creators know the sorts of games they are parodying and leave no stone unturned for a bad pun. The artwork is of a high quality and evocative, in other words, the pics are damned funny. If you want a light, easy, very tongue in cheek game of dungeon crawling and backstabbing, then this is the game for you. Egos need not apply and should be safely left at the door while the rest of you just accepts the madness within. Go forth, quest and may you find the chainsaw of bloody dismemberment.

Fun and family friendly.
This is a wonderful game. It looks a little complicated at first but we started with step one and within mins we had the hang if it. Super fun for the whole family. Good quality game pieces too. Would definitely recommend.
