Irritating issue with clamp, modified myself, now perfect

The clamp I received with my lamp, unlike what some other reviews have said, was metal -- solid cast aluminum. I have no concerns about it failing. In addition, the lamp articulates well, feels fairly sturdy (while still being light enough), and the switch is a typical rotating post lamp switch with a satisfying click. My main complaint is that the lamp just drops into the clamp and stays there due to gravity. The bottom joint of the lamp has a rolled sheet metal post that fits--with basically no wobble--into the hole in the clamp. This would be fine, if it wasn't for the fact that this is an articulating lamp: I accidentally lift it out of the clamp when pushing the lamp head up and away from my work area. I REALLY don't like having to carefully move the lamp slowly and in a roundabout path just to "retract" it without it falling out of the clamp and wrecking its surroundings. After a week of this silly babying, I modified it like so: 1. I bolted a piece of dowel to the bottom of the lamp arm joint (I actually expanded the existing sheet metal post and fit the dowel inside it.) 2. In the clamp, I drilled and tapped an M5 hole that pierces the hole the lamp post sits in. 3. On the dowel, I filed away a slot all the way around at the height of the newly drilled hole that is wide enough for an M5 screw 4. I inserted the modified lamp's new dowel post into the clamp 5. I screwed an M5 screw just far enough into the new hole that it captures the dowel. presto! The lamp still spins all the way around, but it only lifts up out of the clamp about a millimeter. Now I can shove the lamp all around without worrying about it falling out of the clamp. I doubt it would be hard for Globe Electric to add this type of screw-in-slot capture mechanism to the base product. Had I not be able to (relatively) quickly fix this issue, I'd give this lamp 3, MAYBE 4 stars.

Ikea offers a better alternative

First lamp I got was used "like new" but was defective out the box. I saw Ikea sold a similar lamp and decided to try it out. The main differences are in the Ikea lamp having a better clamp, range of motion and wattage. While the Global Electric lamp has the more convenient switch. First of all the Ikea clamp has a slightly longer thread so it might help with thicker surfaces. The base of the clamp itself feels much sturdier with Ikea lamp. It weighs 25g to opposed to 16g for the global electric lamp. It also has tighter tolerances which means less wobble for the lamp once seated into the base. Secondly this might be nit picking but another difference is while both bases can be screwed into the wall, the Ikea lamp has a greater range of motion. The Ikea lamp is able to be pushed further back without hitting the wall should you choose to wall mount it. This could also be handy should you clamp it to the desk and don't want it bumping into things for those in a tighter space. Both lamps have a warning for the limit of Self Ballasted LEDs (SBLEDS) inside the lamp shade. It is much lower for that of incandescent bulbs. For the Ikea lamp the SBLED limit is 13 watts while for the Global Electric it is 10 watts. Lastly, the Global Electric does have a better switch placement. It is on the head of the lamp while Ikea has a paddle switch on the cord. I will be using these with smart bulbs so it's an non issue for me but your use case might be different.

The clamp is the worst!! Lamp is great

The lamp itself is absolutely awesome. The clamp? Is the biggest piece of garbage I’ve ever seen in my life it’s made of cheap plastic. When you put your lamp in it it just spins in circles. There’s nothing to clamp it down or to hold it in place and there’s a good chance It’s going to snap in half for me so I’m gonna have to buy a different clamp for all the lamps I bought which is a shame because the lamp itself is awesome. !! to bed. Too bad they don’t have one made of metal to clamp it to instead of this plastic thing. I’m still gonna buy more of them for painting but I’ll have to buy other clamps

Lamp Great

This lamp works very great for my application. I bought this desk also on Amazon and love it. I am 44 years old and 5 ft 8 and this has perfect height. Lamp lights up very well, couldn't ask for more.

Works as intended, but minor cracklines inside lampshade

Works as intended, and setup was easily. The only minor gripe I have is that there are hairline cracks inside of the lamp shade. It does not interfere with the functionality, but I thought it should be mentioned.

A good hobby / work light

Works as expected. Gives good white light that's easy on the eyes. My only grip is the shade doesn't attach as securely as I'd like and will come off if I move the lamp using the shade. If I grab the lamp above the shade all is good.

Good sturdy articulated lamp.

This is the second of these lamps I buy. Used by my girls to read in bed. The first one is used on the lower bunk bed, which my daughter enclosed in blankets for privacy. No heat emanates from this LED lamp, so no risk of fire or burning her fingers when moving the lamp head. Second was bought for jealous elder sister who is now schooled from home. It swings easily between her bed and her small desk so she can work/read/study with appropriate lighting. In both cases, the spring system is sturdy enough to hold the lamp head where positioned. No sagging or spring back. Overall, satisfied with both purchases. A bit expensive, but built well enough to be worth it. Would have liked the option of a screw-in base bracket for wall/bedside mounting, but can make one myself.

Low quality materials and design for an "architects lamp"

The lamp fits into the table clamp very loose and is metal-on-metal. This will not hold up to extended use. The lamp is unbalanced and flops around when you swivel or adjust the angles. For an "architect lamp", the materials are very low quality eg. a plastic hinge holds lamp globe to arm and metal arms & springs are cheap, light gauge metal. And the LED brightness cannot be adjusted.

Excelente por el precio!!! En serio

Excelente lámpara, diseño clásico, bonito color negro brillante, buen tamaño, la prensa para fijarlo es toda de metal no plástico al igual k el postesito k se inserta en la base-prensa. Tiene muy buena movilidad del brazo, la pinza puede "morder" maximo unos 8-8.5cm lo cual me parece bastante aceptable. El socket es estándar para la mayoría de los focos en México, viene con una bombilla led. No le doy cinco estrellas solo por el detalle de que los pernos o las estrellitas que tienen las articulaciones de los brazos son de un plástico k no me parece el mejor y quizá si se le da múltiples ajustes constantemente seguramente acabarán barriendose y dejando de apretar... Pero eso hasta ahorita no ah pasado, estoy encantado con mi lámpara, le coloque un foco de luz de cultivo para plantas y la uso para darle luz a mis suculentas. Lo compre por 580 pesos... Si la ves a este precio o cercano, vale cada centavo. Y a diferencia de lo que dicen en otros comentarios a mí me llegó en un paquete bien cuidado y sin maltratar todo completo y fácil de armar.
