A little dissapointed by changes of this model over the years.
Summary: I am a little disappointed with the evolution of this line. It's a good shirt, but the styling is more stylistic and the venting seems a step back in quality. The material seems resilient, and that's why I purchase this line (at least in the past). Full review: I originally bought two Mountain Hardwear Canyon shirts and two Columbia PFG Tamiami™ II shirts for traveling to the Philippines on charity work. I needed to work in hot, rainy environments, yet still be presentable while speaking to government, church, and local leaders while on the job. A huge benefit for me was that these shirts do not show sweat stains, they breathe fairly well, and most of my stays were without AC in 95F, 99% humidity climates. The MH Canyon Shirts were a little more 'sporty' looking than the Columbia PFG's, but the material was thicker and seemed to be more resilient, so I wore them more often when working outdoors. Over the years, my older Canyon shirts have accumulated paint stains that I can't wash out, so I thought I'd buy some new ones. The older models had mesh underneath the armpits. At one point in the Canyon shirt's evolution you couldn't even notice the mesh vents were there, aiding in not wanting to look like I'm wearing a camping shirt around town. Here's the problem, the little changes they have made to this new line make it look like an ultra casual, camping shirt. Nice looking, but still like a camping shirt. Although the material is still thicker than the PFG shirts, the bright stitching thread is an attempt at style that turns into "this shirt is so casual it doesn't matter how it looks" type of style. It's a shame, since the material has a nicer appearance than the older ones. Additionally, the arm vents are no longer mesh, but basically a big hole that is sewn in 4 spots (forming three little holes). I worry that this area is more of a weak spot than it was before. Lastly, the colors are now 100% camping/fishing shirt colors. Instead of the nice midnight blue color, its now an ultra-dark, aqua color. I don't know if I will keep following this line after the last iteration. If you don't need slightly heavier material and you prefer a more traditional, toned-down look, I much prefer the Columbia PFG Tamiami™ II long sleeve shirts to these (White and Navy). The Columbia Silver Ridge Lite line is nice too. However, both of those shirts use lighter material than the MH Canyon shirt which might be less resilient if you are working/active around cement, bricks, rocks, heavy tools/equipment, etc. In the meantime, I decided to keep using my old Canyon shirts with the paint stains on them instead of replacing them all. One of these new Canyon shirts is enough.

I'd like it better if they made one for men
The two XL's -my usual size- I purchased were probably a good fit for a prepubescent boy. But for my size 48 chest they were noticeably constricting. No stretch or give whatsoever. This was not only physically uncomfortable but looked awkward when I put my phone in the pocket, and restricted airflow. Fortunately, the trim fit was perfect in the abdomen for me. Suppose I'll have to stop doing pull-ups if I want to develop that slim hipster physique clothes seem to be styled for nowadays. Sigh. The fabric looks good, a silky Dobby-ish weave, but though light it was not very breathable. Very tightly woven fabric. It was considerably harder to breathe through when I 'huff tested' it than an Underarmour Heatgear t-shirt. Still, with such a close fit it's not really hot, the sweat just passes through and spreads out into the fabric where it can evaporate. Looks nice though according to my wife the "Wet Clay" color (actually Olive Drab) along with the Doktari style makes me look like Saddam Hussein holding a press conference. The other color, "Manta Grey", was disappointingly lighter than it appears onscreen. Still a decent travel color which I suppose will lighten up my usual black and dark grey palette though I expect it'll show stains rather easily. Quite wrinkled out of the package. If there was a bit of stretch, and perhaps some underarm vents, I'd like this shirt better.

Great durable hiking shirt
I wore this for a 10 mile hike with a light backpack and it held up great. It was comfortable and breathable. I only have a few small critiques about this shirt. It's not quite as comfortable as the Silver Ridge Lite, but I hardly notice once I start moving. It's also a little heavier in the chest because of all the zippers and buttons, but that's not enough to knock it down. I wish it had another button for the wrist because the provided button is a little wide for my taste. I can probably say the same thing about the whole shirt. It's a little baggy on me around the torso and arms. I have broad shoulders and an athletic build so this shirt might be made to fit a slightly wider body. Overall, I really like this shirt and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a nice hiking shirt that's soft, comfortable, and will survive a little bit of roughing around.

Not nearly as good as in the past
I have been buying MH's Canyon shirts since the early 2000s, and while they have evolved over time, this is probably my least favorite version of it to date. As others have mentioned, the fit is quite different from the past. I ordered the same size as I previously had and it is distinctly tighter under the pits and across the chest -- and I still have one purchased 5 years ago to directly compare with, so it is not just a matter of memory (it's just starting to fall apart, as these things do; thus the need for a replacement). My biggest complaint is the pocket size. They keep getting smaller -- and they have now shrunk the point where my phone (G7 ThinQ) will not fit in any of them in any secure fashion (won't zip, can't be buttoned in). Heck, I can't even fit my hand in the zippered side pockets. Very disappointing alteration from previous designs and basically useless for carrying trail gadgets. But some pros: the fabric is lightweight, breezy and dries super-quick if it gets wet, just as before. Looks nice, though the weave pattern is not my fav (your mileage may vary). Only 3/5 stars for warmth, not because it's "bad" on that front -- it's just that this shirt has never been designed to keep you warm. Quite the opposite. So for my money, I will definitely not be getting this version again for sure. If you want a better Canyon shirt, find one from a few years ago or wait for the next redesign. Sorry, Mountain Hardwear -- you can do better.

Cool and protectant. Plus nipple vents!
Good fit - wears like a slim fit so size accordingly. Wore this for a multi-day backpacking trip in Big Sur. Very sunny and hot, but kept the sun off of me while also being quite cool. Bonus: has nipple vents!
