good value
good value with prompt shipping, and as described. Works well and is good for testing boiler freeze protection. I live in cold northern N.Y. and have to wait too long for unit to adjust to room temperature. I need to find a way to pre warm it up. Have had several days below zero

Works perfectly for boiler Glycol.
After messing around with the cheap squeeze bulb testers, I bit the bullet and got this. It was the cheapest, works perfectly and is light years better than the squeeze bulb junk! It looks kinda funky, but it' super easy to use. You take three drops of fluid (that's all!) from the included dropper, place it on the lens and look through the eyepiece. You will see a scale, and a very clear, bright blue line. That's the level of Glycol in your system. It works by measuring the amount the light bends when passing through the liquid., Its the same type device used by Wine producers, Beer Brewers and anyone else who needs to precisely measure liquid concentrations. You can also easily re-calibrate it yourself with distilled water and the included tiny screwdriver. It will measure Propylene AND Ethylene Glycol as well as battery electrolyte. You see all three scales through the eyepiece. For me, a homeowner who wants to know the precise level of Glycol in my heating system, its perfect, well worth the money and will last for years. Also, mine did come in a nice plastic case/box that holds the tester, dropper and mini-screwdriver. 3/23/2014 UPDATE: I just replaced the thermostat and flushed the coolant in my SUV and refilled with a 50/50 mix. I brought out my handy refractometer to test and was surprised to find I was only at 42%, most likely due to the distilled water still in the block from the flush. I never would have known this if not for this tool! I removed the coolant from the reservoir and refilled with 100% coolant. Drove around a bit to let it mix, retested, and now it read a hair over 50%. Perfect. I love this tool!

The product arrived very quickly. I opened the package and I found the case with the meter and inside the pouch was the eye dropper and a jeweler's screwdriver. "NO INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WITH THE UNIT". It is a guess how it works and what are the parameters for determining the battery condition. Very flimsy construction with the flip lens that covers the reading lens.

A solid unit, appears to work well.
Came with; (1) Soft woven pouch with a small handle and belt loop, metal zipper, black (2) blue lens cloth (3) blue two sided instruction and maintenance guide with diagram (4) soft plastic pipet (5) small adjustment screwdriver (6) refractometer. Reticle is graduated and scaled for Ethylene and Propylene Glycol mixtures (also has scales in percent glycol in parenthesis) and Battery fluid Specific Gravity (also with judgement calls; recharge, fair, good). The hand "Feel" is solid, tad heavy like its mostly made of metal. The dual jointed sample cell cover flips back easily but feels sturdily attached. This is normally a delicate and expensive lab instrument, so you would expect it to be handled carefully. This one is the "Farenheit" scaled instrumented (Not the Celsius or Centigrade) be careful when choosing your purchase model. Perfect for USA and Imperial Measure countries. It is specifically calibrated for automotive fluids, so be very careful you understand it is Not a general purpose Brix or other type of Refractometer. The principles and usage are the same.. but the Reticle scale makes all the difference. It rather makes me think it looks and feels like a Star Wars Light Sabre .. so if you have kids be sure to store it carefully. I specifically took photos of it before I used it and through the Eyepiece with my Cell Phone Camera so I could post real photos of the actual unit as it came. I plan to use it soon. I put some filtered tap water on the sample cell and used it to look at a light source, it was solid white at the bottom right on the 32 (0%) line just as it should be. Very easy to use, very unambiguous to determine the reading.

Excellent results - easy to use
I purchased this to test one of my home radiant heating system loops that contains a propylene glycol mixture. The radiant heating system loop was installed 17 years ago and it was well past due for the fluid mixture to be drained and the system flushed and refilled. I purchased Cryo-tek 100 propylene glycol for the refill and the new, yet to be used, mixture read what it should have. After draining, flushing and refilling this loop with Cryo-tek 100, the post-refill mixture read what I expected. The post-refill mixture was also tested with the Cryo-tek test strips and the strip test results matched the ATC refractometer results. Before using on my radiant heating system, I checked zero with distilled water as instructed then checked a new container of auto 50/50 ethylene glycol mixture and it read dead-on at 50% on the ethylene glycol scale. I then checked a new container of 100% ethylene glycol and it read at the high scale. It is very easy to use this instrument and I am very happy with this purchase.

A total waste of money
Worthless tool. After calibration, no matter what I test, I get the same "20 degrees above zero" reading. Tested new antfreeze right out of the bottle... same reading. Mixed 50/50 with water.... same reading. Could probably test dog urine and get the same reading. A total waste of money. The only thing more pathetic than the tool itself is the ridiculous attempt at English translation per the instructions.

Great Antifreeze Checker
This refractometer is one of the best purchases I have recently made. It is very easy to use. Just put three drops of coolant on the lens and look through the view finder.I have a bunch of vehicles and engines that have all been converted to using polypropylene glycol. For years I have been guessing about what the actual concentration of antifreeze is. When I received this I started checking and found that the concentration was anywhere from 63% to 25%. Now I can reliably adjust the antifreeze to bring it back to 50% where it belongs.

Hilarious translation in the instruction manual! This is a knock off of the better brand. Gave it to my apprentice- his eyes are younger and can read the small scale more easily..
